Rookies will be Stars!

The FIBA U17 World Championship for Men will be played from July 2nd to July 11th, 2010 in Hamburg, Germany. Twelve teams from the five continents will compete for the title.


Already qualified:
Host Nation: Germany

11 additional teams will qualify during the 2009 continental Championships
Americas (3 teams): United States of America, Argentina, Canada
Australia (1 team): Australia
Europe (4 teams): Spain, Lithuania, Serbia, Poland
Africa (1 team): Egypt
Asia (2 teams): China, Korea

The excitement and fun that Youth Basketball creates is visible every two years in Mannheim when the best U18 players from all over the world compete with their National Teams at the well-known Albert Schweitzer Tournament. Since more than 50 years the tournament is one of the best known events in this age-range and proudly hosted by Germany. And the fan interest increased every year. Sold out gyms in Youth Basketball – it happens almost daily in Mannheim.


By introducing the Development Basketball Bundesliga (NBBL), which just started in its fourth season, we accomplished to offer young talents from 32 nationwide teams the opportunity to compete on a high level from October until May. This is crucial for the making the next step to senior level. In addition to the NBBL, the German Basketball Federation etstablished the JBBL (Youth Basketball Bundesliga) in which the Under 16 talents play for their champion. The first season with 56 teams in eight divisions starts this fall.

In addition, successful projects like "Talents with perspective" even younger age-ranges are encouraged intensively in basketball. By the way: among the youngest age range the German Basketball Federation noted their biggest increase in terms of new membership. The FIBA U17 World Championship will for sure push this development with young players further.

Great basketball events

There have been multiple exciting international Basketball events in Germany. The country hosted the Men’s European Championship three times (1971, 1985, and 1993) in addition to the Women’s World Championship which took place in Germany in 1998. The Euroleague played his finale in Germany in 1999 and 2009 as well as the FIBA EuroStars game which was played in here in 1998. Moreover, the country proudly hosted several European Championships in the Youth Division.


Since many years, National Team games with Dirk Nowitzki and the men’s team have also been real magnets for Basketball fans swarming into the arenas. Especially in Hamburg, more than 10,000 visitors gather for the national team games every year. That way, Hamburg became more or less a second home for Nowitzki & Co.


All these great basketball events hosted by Germany revealed that the Basketball hype in our country is enormous and visible everywhere. For the FIBA U17 World Championship this is to be expected as well as a diligent and affectionate high level organization due to Germany’s long-term expertise. All this creates great anticipation and excitement for the best Basketball talents from the world in Hamburg 2010.
