The German Basketball Federation was founded on October 1st, 1949 in Düsseldorf. It is the head organization for basketball in Germany. The headquarters of the German Basketball Federation are based in Hagen, Germany.

There are about 2000 registered clubs in Germany, about 52284 licensed female players, about 145133 licensed male players, and approximately 5000000 unlicensed players.

Since 1934, the German Basketball Federation has been affiliated with the FIBA. Germany currently ranks 7th in the FIBA ranking.
